Oscar Johnson Rites Held in McCallsburg
Funeral services for Oscar E. Johnson were held at the McCallsburg Presbyterian church, Thursday, Sept. 1, the Rev. J. D. Ransom officiating.
Military honors of the Samuel Reir, post 334, of American Legion were directed by R. H. Lounsberry, sergeant-at-arms.
Casket bearers were Joe Johnson, Martin Musland, Clarence Pearson, Elmer Newgaard, Carl Lura and Severin Christensen.
The many beautiful flowers were arranged by Mrs. E. O. Dillin of Nevada and Mrs. Andy Thompson.
There were many gifts to missions and to the Bethany church building fund in honor of Mr. Johnson.
Mrs. F. E. Nail and Miss Catherine Craig sang two duets, "Beautiful Garden of Prayer" and "Sometime We'll Understand." Mrs. LeRoy Ringgenberg was accompanist.
Burial was in the McCallsburg cemetery.
Obituary
The following obituary was read by Rev. Ransom:
Oscar Edwin Johnson, son of the late Edward and Matilda Johnson, pioneer residents of the McCallsburg community, was born Aug. 16, 1895 at the Johnson farmstead, where he spent his early boyhood and attended the nearby rural school. He was confirmed in the Zion Lutheran church in his youth, later transferred to the Presbyterian church and at the time of his death was a member of the Central Presbyterian church at Nevada.
He service his country in the first World War from April, 1917, to April, 1918, spending 11 months overseas. He was wounded in action and confined in a hospital for three months. He was a member of the American Legion post of McCallsburg.
He was united in marriage to Miss Anna Menzel, Jan. 21, 1920, and they established their home on a farm near McCallsburg; later they moved to a farm near Hubbard where Oscar was taken ill. They then moved to McCallsburg, where they resided from some time spending a total of 15 years in that community.
Upon leaving McCallsburg they moved to the home of George Marsh in Milford township with whom they have continued to reside for 15 years--on the farm and for the past few years in Nevada.
Mr. and Mrs. Johnson observed their 25th wedding anniversary Jan. 21, 1945, which was a happy reunion of many friends and relatives.
Oscar long illness reaches back through 25 years. His condition deprived him of many pleasures yet he was always cheerful and patient, never complaining, always grateful for the many kind acts of relatives and friends whose visits he enjoyed.
He was most tenderly and lovingly cared for by his faithful wife, Anna, who so patiently and capably nursed him through his long illness. Everything possible in medical science was done for him but to no avail. He passed away at his home in Nevada at noon Monday, Aug. 29, 1949, after a serious relapse during the past week.
Survivors
He is survived by his wife, Anna Johnson, two sisters, Mrs. Esther Steinberg of Marshalltown, Mrs. Freida Friest of Boone; by two half brothers, Gust Hansen of Mankato, Minn., and Alfred Hansen of Springfield, Ohio.
His parents and one sister, Ella Johnson, have preceded him in death.

Hanson of Lakeview, Ohio; Harold Hanson of Springfield, Ohio, Mrs. Jay Eide of Webster City; Mrs. Joe Friest and Ronnie and Mrs. Merle Saddler of Boone; Mr. and Mrs. Ethan Aiken of Cedar Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Stenberg and Mrs. Darlene Johnson of Marshalltown; Mr. and Mrs. Harlan Stenberg of Baxter, Mr. and Mrs. John Marsh of Clear Lake; Mr. and Mrs. P. N. Junge and Mr. and Mrs. H. Junge of Keystone and Mr. and Mrs. Tom Tarman of Des Moines.
Athers attended from Ames, Collins, Zearing, Story City, Roland and McCallsburg.
