Funeral Rites for Well Known Woman

A large concourse of relatives and friends filled St. Patrick's church in Nevada Friday morning when the last rites were held for Mrs. Ellen Fitzgerald, 74, who passed away at her home, 1220 Ninth street, Tuesday evening at 9:50.

Solemn Requiem High Mass was held at 9:30 with Rev. Daniel A. Gorman, pastor of the deceased, as celebrant, assisted by Rev. J. M. Campbell of Ames, deacon and the Rev. J. J. Buzinski, State Center, sub deacon. Rev. Fr. Frein of St. Anthony was at the organ.

Interment was in St. Patrick's cemetery by the side of the husband, the late Dr. Lawrence Fitzgerald, who passed away at his home in Nevada bout five years ago.

The death of Mrs. Fitzgerals followed an illness of a couple of weeks during which time she was confined to her bed with heart complications.

The deceased was a woman of outstanding qualities. In spite of the fact that she had been quite closely confined to her home for several years her circle of friend widened because of her active interest in them and also her interest in the affairs of her church, which was always uppermost in her mind.

During her years in Nevada she had been actively identified, both as an officer and generous contributor to all the activities of St. Patrick's church.

Mrs. Fitzgerald has been a resident of Nevada for the past 36 years. She had come to Story county in 1883 with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Dailey from Rockford, Ill., where she had been born March 25 1860.

The family on coming to Story county located north of Colo where the parents lived until their death a number of years ago. Here the brothers, Lawrence and Andrew, passed away. A brother and sister had died in Ireland before the parents came to this country. A brother, John Dailey of Mason City, passed away several years ago and the remaining brother, James Dailey, long time resident of the Colo community died at the home of his sister in Nevada seven years ago.

The deceased was married 30 years ago last June 17, to Lawrence Fitzgerald. This marriage was the first one celebrated in the new St. Patrick's church. Rev. M. Nicholls, whom Mrs. Fitzgerald had preceded to Nevada by a couple of years, performed the ceremony.

Previous to coming to Nevada to establish a dressmaking business, the deceased had been employed in the dressmaking department of Marshall Fields in Chicago for several years. She was there in 1893 at the time the Columbian Exposition and while there lived at the home of Roger Sullivan, widely known and prominent politician. She was also the personal friend of the late Dr. J. B. Murphy of Chicago.

For several years before going to Chicago she assisted her brother, John Dailey, in the management of a Railroad Hotel in Mason City. A grand daughter of this brother, Mrs. Blanche Hendrickson of Mason City, was in attendance at the funeral services on Friday.

The pall-bearers were Tom Foley of Ames, long time friend of the family and seven nephews of her late husband. They included T. E. Fitzgerald and Patrick Fitzgerald of Colo, William Fitzgerald of Collins, Elmer Fitzgerald and John Fitzgerald of St. Anthony, James D. Fitzgerald of Nevada and Gerald Croker of Colo.

Mrs. Fitzgerald is survived by her son, John Fitzgerald, by a cousin who was more like a sister and a frequent visitor in Nevada, Mrs. Julia Casey of Mason City, a cousin John Sullivan of Belvidere, Ill., other relatives and unusually wide circle of friends.

A large number of Colo relatives were in attendance at the last rites. Among the other relatives and friends from out of the city were Mrs. Julia Casey and Mrs. Blanche Hendrickson of Mason City, Mrs. James Fitzgerald and daughter Miss Ellen of Stuart, Anthony Ascheral, son John and daughter Kathryn of Duncombe, Hugh Fagen, Des Moines, Miss Kathleen Casey, Ames, Mrs. F. W. McClintock, Maxwell, Miss Mary Croker, Marshalltown, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Moroney, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Coe, Mr. and Mrs. Cupps of Ames, Mrs. Bernice Green and Mrs. Amy Mead of Story City and possibly a number of others.
