Military, Masonic rites for S.C. man

A prominent citizen an doctor of Story City, Dr. Alfred H. Lekwa, 76, died Saturday, July 11, at the Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, at the St. Petri Lutheran Church in Story City. Burial will be in the Story City Municipal Cemetery.

Military and Masoni services will be conducted.

Born Dec. 16, 1893 in Minneapolis, his parents were Hans and Sena Lekwa. At the age of four, he and his family moved to Dows, Iowa.

After graduating from the medical school at the University of Iowa in 1922, he practiced medicine in Dows for eight years. In 1931, he moved to Story City where he practiced until his death, except for the years he served in World War I and II. In World War II, he was Commaner in the Navy.

On June 11, 1924, he married Kathryn Ogden.

Mr. Lekwa has served as Post Commander of Story City Legion Post No. 59; a member of the Kohi Noor Lodge; Thirty Two Degree Mason; Past Master of Masonic Lodge; former mayor and former member of the Story City School Board. He was a member of the St. Petri Lutheran Church where he had served as a trustee. In 1938, he assisted in organizing the Boy Scouts in Story City an he served as Scout Master for a number of years.

The Lions Club presented him the Outstanding Citizen of Story City Award in 1968. In 1969 he was the recipient of the 50 Year Award from Masonic Lodge and an American Legion 50 Year Award.

He was a member of the Story County Medical Association.

His main concern was the youth.

Survivors include his wife Kathryn; one son, Robert Lekwa of Story City; two daughters, Mrs. Jeanne Sansgaard of Kanawha and Miss Marily Lekwa of Story City and six grandchildren. Eight brothers, Oscar Lekwa, Fort Dodge; Edward Anderson and Henry Lekwa, Iowa Falls; Harry Lekwa, Ackley; Nels Lekwa, Clear Lake; Robert Lekwa, Hampton; Theodore Lekwa, Williams and Clarence Lekwa of Davenport also survive.

Funeral arrangements are being made by Soderstrum-Larson Funeral Home in Story City.
