Obituary
Martin Jensen was born on February 25, 1877, the son of Nels and Karen Jensen at Eikener-Horsenes, Denmark, and passed away at the Story City Memorial Hospital on August 16, 1959 at the age of 82 years, 5 months and 21 days.
Mr. Jensen suffered a heart attack on December 18, 1958 for which he was hospitalized until February 5, 1959 when he was able to return to his home. A recurrence of the heart condition on August 15, 1959 caused his reentry into the hospital and his quite sudden death.
As a youth, Mr. Jensen learned the brick and stone masonry trade in Velje, Denmark and served his apprenticeship in Copenhagen. In 1895 he came to this country, settling in Story City, Iowa. After a few years of general labor he again began to follow his masonry trade in 1900. This he pursued and enlarged into a general contracting and plaster business. It was his privilege to have done work in all neighboring counties and in nearly every neighboring town within a radius of twenty-five miles of Story City. Many structures stand in his memory.
In 1904 he was united in marriage to Amanda Gower in Story City. To this union were born three children, a daughter, Mickey and two sons, Elmer and Irvin.
In 1921 he joined Grace Evangelical United Brethren Church under the guidance of Pastor L. F. Smith. During his years of membership, he was active in many phases of church work, being present at the last regular worship service of Grace Church on August 2.
Mr. Jensen is survived by his widow, Amanda, a daughter Mickey (Mrs. Byron Hackberry) of Des Moines, two sons, Elmer and Irvin of Story City; five grandchildren Michael and Carolyn Jensen of Story City, Mrs. Donna Jensen Tanner of Whittier, Calif., Mrs. Virginia Jensen Jewell of Jewell and Sandra Jensen of Story City, two great grandchildren, Christy and Becky Tanner, two sisters, Mrs. John M. (Sena) Johnson of Story City and Mrs. Christine Kopf of Ames, and many nieces and nephews.
