Stella Hadley is dead at 90

Mrs. Stella L. Hadley, longtime resident of Nevada and for many years one of its most influential citizens, died at 3 a.m. Monday in the Story County Hospital at the age of 90.

Mrs. Hadley had been ill for the last year and had been hospitalized since before Christmas.

Funeral services for Mrs. Hadley will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Ryan Funeral Home with Rev. Michael Rush officiating. Interment will be in the Nevada Cemetery.

Stella Elizabeth Lowman was born November 21, 1881, in Iowa City, daughter of William and Mary E. Lowman.

She attended Iowa City schools and was graduated from the University of Iowa in June 1902. She taught Latin and English in the Tipton High School for three year, returned to the university with a teaching fellowship, and received Master's Degree in Latin and English in 1907.

She was married August 26, 1908 to Herbert E. Hadley and came to Nevada, where she had lived since. She was active in the community affairs of all kinds. She has been a long time member of Nevada Library Board of Trustees, serving as secretary and chairman of the Board, and contributing to children's books generously.

As a member of the Library Board she was chosen to serve as Trustee for the Mabel Gates Wadsworth Trust an served as its chairman. With P. R. Mathison and Carl Hertz she built Gates Hall and is still Trustee of the Trust Fund for that building.

For many years she worked as secretary to her husband in his law office and had a wide acquaintance over the County and State. She was a member of the Sorosis Club, Story County Women's Republican Club, a fifty year member of Eastern Star and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Her husband, Col. H. E. Hadley preceded her in death on October 23, 1960.

She is survived by Milo Hadley of Nevada, Janet Brock of Chicago, Illinois and a number of other nieces, nephews and relatives.
