Last Rites For Henry W. Bickelhaupt
Henry W. Bickelhaupt, son of Henry and Mary (Bickenholtz) [sic] Bickelhaupt, was born in Story county, south and west of Story City on Nov. 4, 1880. He grew to manhood on the old original homestead. He took his schooling in the country school of the neighborhood.
On Oct. 22, 1912 he was united in marriage to Belle Sampson at Boone. Together the couple set up housekeeping on the farm. Three children were born to his union, all of whom survive. Henry was baptized in Monroe, Iowa in the German Lutheran faith. On Dec. 27, 1931 he, with his wife, united with Grace Evangelical United Brethren church, Story City, under the pastorate of Rev. C. L. Fuller. He was a faithful member to his death, attending services regularly as long as health permitted and also serving the church in an official capacity.
In March 1947, the family left the farm and moved to Story City.
Mr. Bickelhaupt had enjoyed good health until last fall when he had a sick spell which confined him to his bed and to his home for some weeks. He had recovered quite well from this siege when, on Feb. 2 he suffered a heart attack. From this it was thought he was slowly recovering but last Wednesday he suffered another attack and died at 3:30 in the afternoon.
Surviving are his wife, three children, Viola at home, Virgil and Kenneth on farms near Story City and three grandchildren, Hubert Paul, Lana Kay and Harold Jay. Surviving also are two sisters, Mrs. Rose Nelson of Story City, and Mrs. Martha Jensen of Clarion. Preceding him in death were his parents, three brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services were held last Saturday, March 7th, with a short service at the home of his son, Kenneth at 1:30 and at 2 o'clock at Grace E.U.B. church, Story City, with the pastor, W. D. Winter, officiating. The Rev. Al Rau led in prayer at the service. Virginia Jensen and Harlan Winter sang, "My Saviour First of All," and "Anywhere with Jesus," accompanied by Mrs. Barbara Doolittle at the organ.
Interment was in Center cemetery.
Pall bearers were Arnold and Ovie Haugland, Charles and Robert Sampson, Clarence Bickelhaupt and Everett Hanna.
