MAN'S BIT PROVED FATAL AND BOONE MAN IS DEAD
Boone, July 3--INS--Clarence Slick, Woodward, Iowa, was arrested at his home and brought here today to face charges of assault with intent to murder following the death earlier in the day of R. L. Martin, 37, in a hospital here from a wound inflicted two weeks ago by an assailant whom police claim was Slick.
Slick, a gravel contractor, bit Martin on the arm at an oil station west of here two weeks ago in a fight, police say. Blood poisoning set in and the wound proved fatal.
Martin, according to authorities had been jailed several times for intoxication. He had not, however, been drinking on the day the fight occurred, it is said, but Slick is said to have been drunk at the time of the brawl.
Until two or three days ago authorities knew nothing of the affair, but Martin;s condition became serious and an operation was performed in an attempt to save his life. This was thought to have been successful but the poison spread and he succumbed today.
Slick refused to comment when arrested and would not reveal the cause of the fight, other than to say "it's a bad deal." Police, however, say an old gambling grudge was the cause of the fight.
