FORMER NEVADA PIONEER DEAD
DANIEL PHILLIPS DIED THURSDAY AND FUNERAL WAS HELD SATURDAY
Daniel H. Phillips, one of the pioneer residents of Grant township and Nevada, died at the home of a niece, Mrs. Miller, near Anaheim, California, Thursday, Jan. 9 at 4 o'clock and was buries at Santa Ana, by the side of his wife, who died less than a year ago. The funeral was held Saturday at 3 p.m. according to word received locally from the niece.
Mr. Phillips, who was probably about 87 years of age, was ill and confined to his bed at the time of his death of his wife.
Mr. Phillips came to Nevada in an early day, probably shortly after the Civil War, coming here as an journeyman blacksmith. Later he bought the eighty acre farm, two miles west of the city which is now owned by Mack Toms. There he lived for number of years working the farm and conducting a blacksmith business on the side.
Next he disposed of that and bought 120 acres south of there, in the south half of section 10 and he has continued to own that land.
It was probably thirty years ago that they retired and moved into Nevada, living first in a house on the east side of Fifth, north of M avenue, and later bought what was the O. B. Alderman property, a brick house on Fifth street, across fro the southwest corner of the Court House square and there they continued to live until they left for California.
Quiet, unassuming people, their acquaintance was not wide yet they were held in the highest of esteem by those who knew them.
Mr. Phillips was a long time and consistent member of the Nevada Masonic lodge and it was in that organization that his acquaintance was most general.
