Death of Elder Smith.

Rev. W. T. Smith, formerly presiding elder of the Methodist church for this district with headquarters at Ames, died a week ago at Los Angeles, where he had been residing for several years. His death was sudden and the result of apoplexy, and his age is given as seventy-one. He was a man of much force and strong character and interested in the affairs of the world as well as of his church. He was presiding elder at one time or another in several districts of the Des Moines conference and was for a time missionary secretary of the general conference. In 1906, near the end of his ministerial service in this district, he was candidate of the stand-patters in for representative in this county. He made an active canvas and had a strong support; but this county was not stand-pat, and he was defeated in the Republican primary by George C. White. It was soon after this contest that his term as presiding elder expired and he retired from the active ministry and removed to California. He still retained property interest at Ames and a warm place in the regard of very many Story county people.
