OBITUARY

SHADOW ACROSS A THRESHOLD

Meda Ayers [sic], son of John and Ellen Ayers, formerly of Nevada township, was born January 11, 1898, at Elkhart, Polk county, and died at the parental home in Des Moines, June 3, 1907, aged 9 years, 4 months, and 29 days. The lad was taken sick on the 21st of March with grippe which developed complications, and made him a great sufferer for weeks unable to lie down, yet patient and without murmur. Everything was done for him that medical skill, kind hands and loving hearts could so but to no avail. He made a brave struggle for life, but the last enemy conquered. He was faithful member of the Junior society and the Sunday school of the United Evangelical church of Des Moines. On the first Sunday of March he signed the active membership pledge and became an active member of the Junior K. L. C. E. That day he testified for his master. It was brief but full of meaning. He stood up and said "I love Jesus." We then little thought that he would so soon go to be with the Jesus whom he loved. Just before he died he said, "The cord is broken." and then he repeated, "Soon, soon." His last words were "Just a minute and a half more," then he breathed out his life and his spirit went home to God. He leaves father, mother, two brothers and three sisters and many friends to mourn his departure. Burial took place at Iowa Center June 5th. Funeral services were conducted in the home in Des Moines and also in the Iowa Center U. E. church by Rev. F. B. Utt of Des Moines assisted at Iowa Center by Rev. White of the Presbyterian church of Maxwell.
