OBITUARY

DEATH OF MRS. S. HARVEY DYE.

Mrs. Emma Dye Sherk, Wakonda, South Dakota, writes us under date May 29, 1907, facts relating to the life and death of her mother which will be of interest to the numerous relatives, old neighbors and friends of the S. H. Dye family in Story county. The Dyes were residents of Story county for 34 years, coming here in 1852, as the letter states, for most of that period occupying a farm over on the East Indian, and for a few years north part of Nevada. Mrs. Dye was a sister of Mr. Alonzo Hague, now of Alliance, Nebraska, and was highly respected. The letter is as follows:

"By request of my mother, Mrs. Melissa Dye, who has just passed away, I write this to the many friend readers of the Representative. She, although 78 years old, did her own writing until early last fall when her right hand and arm became helpless. She was taken ill the last week of January with la grippe, a complication of diseases followed and all through the month of February each day seemed her last; yet she rallied in April, could sit in a rocker most of the day and walk a few step by assistance. After the first of May however she grew weaker day by day. She was ready and waiting and even longed to go to her Heavenly rest where there are so many dear ones. Father is very poorly but not bedfast. They have made their home with me this winter. The children all visited them during the winter except Mrs. Allie Murray of Mancos, Colorado. Mrs. Dilla Cottoncame from Flagier, Colorado; Mrs. Gertrude Moore, Burlington, Kansas; Mrs. Victoria Sherk, Wakonda, South Dakota; William Dye, Pullman, Nebraska; Mrs. Anna Parcher, Sioux City, Iowa; John Dye, Sioux City, Iowa; Frank Dye, Bassett, Nebraska; and Herbert Dye, Ethan, South Dakota.

"Melissa Bloomington Hague was born in Centerville, Wayne county, Indiana, January 1823, and died at Wakonda, South Dakota, May 29, 1907. At the age of nine years she moved with her parents to Missouri where she lived until she was sixteen years old. Her father having died she with her mother, sister and three brothers moved to Indiana. December 18, 1848, she was married to Samuel Harvey Dye, who still survives her. Twelve children blessed their home, Annette, Francis and Ella Maranda died in infancy, the others survive her. She with her husband two children moved to Iowa in 1852. In 1886 she with her husband and four sons moved to South Dakota and from there to Nebraska. They returned from there to Dakota where she passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Emma Sherk. Only the two daughter living at Wakonda and Mrs. Parcher of Sioux City were able to attend the funeral, which was held at Lodi, Friday afternoon. She left besides her 10 children, 27 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and 2 brothers. She joined the Methodist church at the age of sixteen and lived a Christian life till called to the better land. In the winter when the children were with her she made preparations for her funeral."
