Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Marlene Mae Powers was born in Bismarck, N.D., daughter of Val and Ella (Bootsma) Ryckman. She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith and grew up on the family farm in Pollock, S.D.

Marlene received a teaching degree from Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D. After graduating, she began teaching 5th grade. On July 6, 1957, she married Donald Powers. Marlene devoted her life to service of many church ministries through Calvary United Methodist Church and Ascension Lutheran Church. She also made a difference in many lives through Birthright, jail ministries, Gideon's, and the Butterfly Freedom House.

Marlene joined her Heavenly Father on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017.

Marlene is survived by her husband of 59 years and 9 months, Dr. Donald Powers of Ames; her children, Alisa (Steven) Kendall of Troy, Ill., Joel (Christina) Powers of Adel, Iowa and Amy (Steven) Westrich of Marion, Ill.; six grandchildren, Matlock Kendall, Deidra Kendall, Nicole Powers, Bret Powers, Benjamin Westrich and Shelby Westrich; one great-grandchild, Jasper Kendall; her siblings, Gordon Ryckman, Valmen Ryckman and Lynda Grenz; and many niece nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her step-mother, Elsie; and an infant sister, Valma Jane.

Adams Funeral Home in Ames is assisting the family with arrangements.
