OBITUARY

DEATH OF MRS. WHEATLY

Mrs. Laura A. Wheatly, a pioneer of Nevada township, died on Friday last at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. H. McCain, at Colo, aged 88 years and 5 days.

Laura Abrams was born at Cincinnati, Ohio, January 17, 1821, removed with her parents when a child to Hamilton county, Indiana, and was married there to Allen Wheatly on March 20, 1840. Mr. and Mrs. Wheatly continued to live in Indiana until 1854, when they came to Iowa and to Story county, and entered with the government the Wheatly farm in the southeast part of Nevada township. Mr. Wheatly died there in 1870; but Mrs. Wheatly and so many of the family as remained at home continued to live there until about eight years ago when Mrs. Wheatly went to live at Colo with her daughter, Mrs. McCain. Mrs. Wheatly had been in poor health for a year and at her time of life her death was not a surprise. Mrs. Wheatly was the mother thirteen children of whom only four survive, Newton Wheatly of Fairview, South Dakota, Phoebe, Mrs. McCain of Colo, Laura Wheatly, now at Clarinda, and Luke Wheatly, now at Blackwell, Oklahoma. Of the surviving children only Newton and Mrs. McCain were able to be at the funeral. Mrs. Wheatly was a capable and energetic woman who met successfully the trials of pioneer days and lived the enjoy the many years the fruits of early industry. She belonged to a generation that has but few survivors in the locality, and as it is recalled that she was the mother of a family when she and her husband came to Story county to occupy government land, there is vivid suggestion of what changes have bee wrought here within the limits of an active life.

The funeral was held at Colo on Sunday.

Mrs. Wheatly's children wish to make grateful acknowledgement for kindness received from friends and neighbors in the time of their mother's illness, death and funeral.
