HURLED TO DEATH
Clement H. Knoll Struck and instantly Killed by No. 11 Last Sunday
Maxwell Tribune: Death casts a pall upon the community at any time and when it comes suddenly and without warning it is doubly terrible. Following the ditching of No. 61 last Saturday evening, on Sunday evening, at a point a mile and a half west of Haverhill, No. 11, the Milwaukee west bound passenger train, struck and killed Clement H. Knoll, a deaf mute who was walking along the track, and the body was hurled clear from the right of way.
John Gibson, of Maxwell, was a passenger on the train and assisted in bearing the body to the train, where a search disclosed that fact that he had $365 in his pockets, but no mark of identification. The body was brought to Melbourne where a friend recognized it and it was sent back to Haverhill on a freight about 8:00 o'clock.
Mr. Knoll had spent the day at his father's home in town and was returning to the farm of his brother by whom he was employed. Being deaf he did no hear the roar of the approaching train, and when the engineer saw that he did not leave the track it was too late to stop the heavy train. Under the circumstances no blame can be attached to the engineer.
