KILLED IN A FALL
Fatal Accident Befell Lewis Askland Near Huxley.
Slater News: Lew Askland was killed at the home of his brother Tom north of Huxley Friday afternoon. The sad accident happened as Lewis, in company with Tom's hired hand, were in the field after a load of fodder. Lew was on the load receiving the corn shocks as they were being handed him by the hired hand. Standing in the rear end of the rack directing the work, the horses suddenly started up. Lew lost his balance and fell backward, striking on the frozen ground on the side of his head. He fell with terrific force and was dead when the hired hand reached his side. A closer examination later revealed a fractured skull if not a broken neck.
Lew had been staying in Chicago of late. Being layed off during the recent money stringency he came to Slater while waiting for word to return to work at Chicago. Getting tired of loafing her he went over to spend a week or so at the home of his brother Tom who had gone to Iowa City to see a doctor.
The news of his death was a severe blow to his many friends here who had known him for year, he having grown to manhood in this community and had served Slater as its first postmaster. On Monday word came from Chicago for him to return immediately. The dispatch came too late, however. Deceased reached an age of forty five years and aside from his aged parents, a brother and three sisters, he is survived by his wife who is in California just now, but had sent word that she will be here for the funeral.
