NEVADA MAN DIED FRIDAY EVENING

JOHN W. GRIFFITH CALLED BY DEATH AFTER LONG ILLNESS

John W. Griffith, 79, died at his home 705 Fifth street, Nevada, Friday night, after an illness which had him confined to his home for three months.

The funeral will be held at the Morfoot Funeral Home, Sunday afternoon at 2:00, with Rev. Lookingbill in charge after which interment will be in Center Grove cemetery, Union township by the side of his wife who passed away a number of years ago.

Mr. Griffith, a native of Ohio where he was born Oct. 3, 1852 came west with his parents when a child but a year old. They settled first in Illinois and there they remained until he was boy 16 years of age, when they came on to Iowa and located on farm in Indian Creek township.

There he was married August 24, 1871 to Miss Mary Almira Groseclose and to their union nine children were born. Six of those children survive the parents. They are Dora E. Jones and Nellie Hopper, both od Des Moines and Frank E., Eugene W., John Walter and Floyd H. Griffith, all of near Cambridge. The deceased children are Ida L. McClintock, Clara M. Whiteman and Hazel Roseborrough.

One of the pioneers of the south part of the county, Mr. Griffith continued to live upon the old homestead and raised the large family of children not retiring and moving to Nevada until February of 1916.

Griffith Funeral Sunday Afternoon

Funeral services for the late John Griffith, 79, who died at his home 705 Fifth street, Friday night, was held Sunday afternoon at the Morfoot funeral home with Rev. C. E. Lookingbill in charge.

The service was largely attended, the home being well-filled with old friends and neighbors who joined with members of the family in paying final tribute of earthly respect to the Indian Creek township pioneer.

Mrs. Harry Lough sang two solos being accompanied on the piano by Mrs. J. C. Hathaway.

The pallbearers were C. M. Webb, William Garlock and J. O. Thompson of Cambridge, O. N. Torry and Wilbur Warner of Maxwell and Charles Gamble of Nevada.

Of the nine children born to Mr. and Mrs. Griffith six survive, and all were present at the funeral. Besides the six children he leaves 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He also leaves the youngest sister, Mrs. Lena B. Matthews of Ames, besides a host of friends.
