Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.
June Thelma Sondall was born July 3, 1924 to Otis and Selma (Opsvedt) Johnson in Roland, Iowa. June and Jennings Sondall of Story City were married in 1943. She was a lifelong resident of the Roland/Story City area and worked at the canning factory in Roland, made candled eggs, and detassled corn. She also worked as a school lunch cook for over 20 years before retiring in 1989.
June dedicated herself to her husband and four children, and was delighted when she was blessed with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She used a loving, calm, common sense style of parenting and could discipline by just using “the look”.
She was the champion of sorting, organizing and keeping meticulous family records. June loved crosswords, puns and other word plays. Hunting for a bargain was a way of life.
Everyone enjoyed getting one of her famous backrubs. June was a talented “from scratch” cook famous for her kumla, kringla, chicken schnitzel, and perfect gravy. Also, she never met something chocolate that she didn’t like.
June passed away at 91 years of age on April 24, 2016 at Bethany Manor in Story City.
June is survived by four children, Stan (Jane) Sondall of Urbandale, Shirley (Gary) Colston of Leavenworth, Kansas, Patsy (Harold) Waggoner of Urbandale and Jim (Christy) Sondall of Richland, Washington; seven grandchildren, Cindy (Matt) Camp, Margie (Mike) McCoy, Deborah (Richard) Zermeno, Michael (Heather) Colston, Julie Lockhart, Justin Sondall and Victoria Sondall; and eleven great-grandchildren, Nathaniel Camp, Jeffrey Camp, Ashley Camp, Elizabeth McCoy, Kathleen McCoy, Andrew McCoy, Benjamin McCoy, Andon Colston, Lily Colston, Ethan Colston and Anna Lockhart.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jennings Sondall; an infant son; her grandson, Christopher Waggoner; her great-granddaughter, Jennifer Camp; two brothers; and two sisters.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethany Life Communities, 212 Lafayette Avenue, Story City, IA 50248.
