Arlene Witmer, 91, of Maxwell, passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
Arlene was born August 1, 1924, to Carl Leroy and Ada Opal (Taylor) Hubbard. Growing up, she loved living on the farm and the life that went with it. Arlene graduated from Maxwell High School in 1943. On October 17, 1947, Arlene was united in marriage to Marold “Buss” Witmer in Maxwell.
Arlene was a member of the Maxwell United Methodist Church, where she was active in the UMW. She was a dedicated member of the Community Historical Society and served as secretary for the organization for many years. Arlene participated in a wide range of activities and groups including Pat’s sewing club which made quilts for the homeless, Monday Study club, ICU club, and Thursday Morning Coffee Club. Arlene enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing, genealogy and was a longtime supporter of Iowa State Women’s Basketball. Her most cherished hobby, however, was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Arlene is survived by her son, Stephen (Margaret) Witmer of Maxwell; her grandchildren: Jessica Clark of Charleston, SC, Kelly (Joseph) Wierson of Maxwell and Kimberly (Lance) Birchmier of Slater; and her great-grandchildren: Kayla Capitan, Logan Wierson and Mason Birchmier.
Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her daughter, Judy Witmer Clark; her brother, Harlan Hubbard; and her sister, Betty Lavon Dunblazier.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 11, at the United Methodist Church in Maxwell with Pastor Jerry Swanberg officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Maxwell Cemetery in Maxwell.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Maxwell United Methodist Church or The Community Historical Society in memory of Arlene.
