Virgil Dwight Fowles Sr., age 84, passed away Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at his home in Ames. A gathering of friends and family will be 1:00-2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 19 with a 2:00 p.m. Celebration of Life Memorial Service at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way in Ames. Burial will follow at Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Virgil was born January 1, 1932 in Hudson, South Dakota to Dwight R. and Olive L. Fowles. He moved to Ames and married Patricia A. Peterson on February 28, 1951. From their union, they had three sons, one daughter, six grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Virgil was employed by the Ames Fire Department for 14 years before he embarked on his career as an insurance agent and later started his own insurance company, "Alpha." He retired to Mountain Home, Arkansas in 1991. In 2001, he moved back to Iowa to be closer to his family.

He enjoyed fishing, camping, square dancing and in later years, puzzling. He also loved to be around children and activities at his church.

Virgil is survived by his daughter, Pamela S. (Mark) Price of State Center, sons, Virgil D. (Susan) Fowles Jr. of Ames, Michael J. (Kathleen) Fowles of Ames, and brother, Darrell R. (Beverly) Fowles of Boone. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Patricia and son, Brian Sean Fowles.

Memorials may be directed to First Christian Church of Ames and Saint Jude Children's Hospital.
