Rites Are Held For Vernon O. Smith At Ryan's Monday

Vernon Oscar Smith was born in Nevada, Iowa, Sept. 30, 1906, the son of Oscar and Mary Smith. He died April 5, 1961 at the Veteran's Hospital in Des Moines, where he had been a patient for ten days.
With the exception of short periods of time, Vernon lived in Nevada, attended the public school and worked for several individuals and companies, as well as being self-employed. The last few years of his life he lived at the Soldiers Home in Marshalltown.
November 16, 1942, Vernon enlisted in the army at Camp Dodge, and was later given a medical discharge from the service. Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Lola, and by three brothers, Erwin, Orville and Lewis.
Surviving are two brothers, Marvin and Bernice, both of Nevada, one aunt, Mrs. David Pittman of LeRoy, Ill., several nieces and nephews, as well as a host of friends.

Services
Funeral services for Vernon O. Smith were held at the Ryan Funeral Home Monday, April 10, 1961 at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. W. R. Tuttle officiating. Miss Virginia Bierschwal, organist, played a number of selections, before and after the service.
Military services at the gravesite were in charge of the Nevada American Legion Post No. 48. Rev. E. P. Windman was chaplain and John Stark, commander.
The casket bearers were W. F. Ball, Ben Fetterhoff, Paul Mousel, Clarence Stark, Adolph Kleinschmidt and Wendell Vinzant.
Burial was in the Nevada cemetery.

Others here for the service came from Indiana, LeRoy, Ill., Churdan, Scranton, Marshalltown, Colo and Bondurant.
