Lawrence Leroy Knaphus, 94, of McCallsburg, died Saturday, April 18, 2015 at Bethany Manor surrounded by his family.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 22 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 23 at 10:30 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church in McCallsburg. Burial will follow in the Warren Township Cemetery in McCallsburg, Iowa.
Lawrence was born January 9, 1921 on a farm in rural McCallsburg to S.L. and Inger (Alendal) Knaphus. He graduated from McCallsburg Schools in 1938. He farmed south of McCallsburg since 1939. He married Frances Toot in Fernald on June 19, 1949. He was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church, Key Cooperative, and Story County Farm Bureau. He served on the McCallsburg Cooperative board for 13 years and was an ASC Committee man for many years. He will be remembered for his love of auctions (he still has his original bidder’s number from the 1950s), farming, and tinkering in his shop to make things for the farm.
He is survived by his daughter Janet (Dan) Richardson of Ames and son Alan (Karen) Knaphus of McCallsburg; grandchildren Jody (Tim) Kelley of Albion and Andy (Amy) Richardson of Slater; and great-grandchildren Ava, Isaiah, and Violet Richardson and Ayden Kelley.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his wife Frances in 1998, brother, George and sister, Sigrid Knaphus.
Memorials contributions may be made to Bethany Life Communities or Bethany Lutheran Church. Fredregill Funeral Home in Zearing is in charge of arrangements.
