Kirwin Dean Powell was born May 3, 1935 to Irwin and Helen (Fairchild) Powell in Linn Grove, Iowa. He served in the United States Army and graduated with a Bachelors degree from Iowa State University in 1960. He married Jacqueline Jess on September 1, 1961 in Schleswig, Iowa. Kirwin and Jacqueline moved numerous times during the early years of their marriage, finally settling in Ames in 1974. He worked in human resource management for many years and then became a Shelter Insurance agent in 1987. He retired in 2010. Kirwin was a member of the Town and Country Kiwanis Club. He enjoyed gardening, attending Iowa State athletic events, hunting and fishing, and in more recent years especially following and attending the athletic activities of his two grandsons.

Kirwin passed away on January 23, 2015 at 79 years of age.

Kirwin is survived by two children, Jill (David) Gabel and their children, Delton and Payton, of Fargo, North Dakota and Trent Powell, of West Des Moines; and one brother, Richard Powell, of West Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jacqueline; and two sisters, Nelda Meinking and Polly Elkin.
