Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Viola Ardella Bergeson was born August 17, 1914 to Adolph and Emelia (Draves) Iverson near Dows, Iowa. She graduated from Dows High School in 1933. After graduation, she went to Ellsworth to work for her sister, Mamie, helping with housework and farm related work. It was there she met her future husband, Walter Bergeson. Viola and Walter were married February 22, 1941 in Ellsworth, Iowa. They farmed near Ellsworth until they moved to Ames in 1958. Viola was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames, where she was active in several church groups. She was one of the first members of the Sewing Blanket Ministry which made quilts for Lutheran World Relief. Viola helped each year make a quilt that was donated to the Riverside auction. For many years, Viola went to Ellsworth and quilted there with a group of ladies. She also volunteered many hours for the former Wednesday fellowship meals and folding the monthly newsletter for the church. Viola traveled extensively throughout the United States with her husband after his retirement and spent many winters in Florida with friends.

Viola passed away peacefully Friday, January 23, 2015 at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames at 100 years of age.

Those left to honor Viola's memory are her son, Ronald Bergeson, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; her daughter, Linda (Clyde) Anderson, of Yorkville, Illinois; her granddaughter, Sara Olson, of Glendale Heights, Illinois; her grandson, Kirk Anderson, of Yorkville; her sister, Arlene Ashmore, of Ames; and several nieces and nephews.

Viola was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her brother, Elwood (Jean) Iverson; and her sisters, Mamie (Delbert) Bauge and Ilene (Russell) Wilhelm.

Viola was a masterful quilter and created many splendid works of art as part of her legacy. Her grandchildren received many special quilts, including a baby quilt, a t-shirt quilt, and a double wedding ring quilt. She also used her sewing talent to make a special quilt for other family members and friends.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister. Viola was treasured by all for her kind heart, gentleness, hard work, love for her family, and her unshakable faith.

Memorial contributions can be directed to Israel Family Hospice House or The Sewing Blanket Ministry of Bethesda Lutheran Church.
