LELAND S. DAWSON
Leland S. "Lee" Dawson, 85, of Nevada, died Monday, March 11, 1985 at Mary Greeley Medial Center in Ames, of heart failure and complications.
He ws born Oct. 16, 1899, to Willford and Edith (Lockwood) Dawson. He attended schools a Aurelia, Ia., and graduated from Aurelia High School.
Mr. Dawson grew up in the Aurelia Community and farmed in the area until 1934 when they purchased the grain elevator at Gilbert, Ia. In 1956 they purchased the Dawson Elevator in Nevada, and his family has continued to operate the business.
Mr. Dawson belonged to the Elks Lodge in Ames, the Elevator and Grain Organization, Iowa Grain and Feed Dealers and Nevada American Legion Post No. 48. He was a past Rotary member.
He served in the US Navy in World War I.
Survivors include a son, Robert Dawson of Nevada; a sister, Clestine Smith of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
His wife, Margaret, died June 9, 1984. He was also preceded in death by six brothers, Harry, Ward, Clay, Jess, Manley and Windel, and a sister, Joyce Launer.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 14 at Ryan Funeral Home, 5th and Lincoln Highway, Nevada, with Rev. Ernest Larson of the Nevada United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Nevada Cemetery.
The family will be at the funeral home Wednesday evening and friends may stop by at any time that is convenient.
