Marvin Smith Jr. dies in Peru

NEVADA -- A life-time resident of Nevada who was a very successful farmer here died of a heart attack Wednesday morning in Cuzco, Peru.

Marvin Smith, Jr., 61, died while participating in a tour with Wallaces' Farmer Magazine Company. Accompanying Smith on the journey to the foreign lands inspecting the various farming methods, was his wife, Dolores.

The 1941 graduate of Nevada High School served his tour of armed services duty in the United States Air Force and was a very active member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. He was a member of the Nevada Lion's Club, vice-president of the Story County Soybean Association, a member of the Farm Bureau, one of the originators of the Story County Property Tax Association and was one of the state directors of the Iowa Property Tax Association.

He was also a former 4-H leader, two years ago was a candidate for the state legislature, and he was a member of the Central Iowa Airport Committee.

Smith is survived by his wife; his mother, Mrs. Marvin Smith, Sr.; two sons, Marvin Smith, III of Nevada and Ted Smith, a student at Iowa State University in Ames; two daughters, Mrs. Don (Marrie Lyn) Williams of Berrien Springs, Michigan, and Jennifer, at home in Nevada; one granddaughter, Grace Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Smith III; and one sister, Mrs. Ray (Marilyn) Lounsberry of Nevada.

Funeral services are pending at Ryan's Funeral Home in Nevada.
