Ernest C. Gretten was born at Gilbert, July 2, 1873, a son of Michael and Hannah Gretten, in 1899 he came to Nevada and for the succeeding 53 years with the exception of the period he had been in county office, he had lived as a member of the Hass household.
For many years he had been associated with the late Mr. Hass as a horse buyer in Story county.
Mr. Gretten was elected sheriff of Story county, serving from 1913 to 1919. He had also been deputy sheriff under Fred Warren.
During World War I he served upon the local draft board as chairman throughout the war.
During his illness he was in bed for five and a half months at the Hass home where he was given devoted care by Bessie Hass and her sisters, Mrs. Belle Henrehan of Nevada and Mrs. Lizzie Crawford of Gilbert. He had also been hospitalized in the Methodist hospital in Des Moines from Jan. 25 to February 6, 1952.
Following the death of Mr. Hass, Mr. D. S. Beckley assisted Mr. Gretten on his trips as a horse buyer until failing health made that impossible.
Throughout his life he was recognized as a man of fine character and integrity whose friends were numbered by all who knew him.
Mr. Grethen is survived by five brothers, Will of California, Lynus of Kincaid, Kansas, Wayne, Harold and Melbourne of Gilbert, and two sisters, Mrs. Nellie Gretten of Ames and Morna Gretten of Gilbert.
