Paul Joel Saveraid was born June 22, 1929 to J.O. and Eva (Satterlee) Saveraid in Story County, Iowa. Paul graduated from White Oak High School in 1947 and then served as a crew chief on B-47 Bombers in the United States Air Force, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. Paul and Katherine Vespestad were married June 25, 1953. He was a farmer and worked as a hydraulic specialist at John Deere and retired after 32 years in 1980. Paul invented and patented a 3-point hitch cement mixer and bin for Ferguson tractors. He built and sold them for several years. Paul was a life-long member of Palestine Lutheran Church where he served many different roles: vice-president, deacon, trustee, cemetery committee and taught Sunday school for 20 years. He was also a member of the Central Iowa Chapter of the Hudson-Essex-Terraplane Club. Paul loved farming, restoring tractors and traveling. He was always willing to help others and his family was the joy of his life. Paul was a man of faith, a loyal husband and loving father and grandfather.
Paul went to be with the Lord with his family gathered around him, April 24, 2014 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames at 84 years of age.
Paul is survived by his wife, Katherine Saveraid, of Cambridge; three daughters, Norma (Keith) Colton, of Cedar Rapids, Debra (Dan) Hoffman, of Marion and Sandra (Bill) Harleen, of Madrid; thirteen grandchildren, Kimberly, Jeff and Ben Colton, David (Lindsey), Aaron, Leah (Richard) Luth and Stephen Hoffman, Luke and McKenzie Shaffer, Matthew Farquharson, Cristen (Brian) Harmon, Melinda (Jason) Kam and Brian Harleen; four great-grandchildren, Jacob and Bradley Hoffman and Charlie and William Harmon; his brother, Arthur (Marilyn) Saveraid, of Huxley; his sister, Janet Roberts, of Oceanside, California; his son-in-law, Sam (Andrea) Shaffer, of Cambridge; his sister-in-law, Shirley Saveraid, of Collins; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, DeAnn Shaffer; and two brothers, Kenneth Saveraid and Herbert (Lorrie) Saveraid.
Memorials may be designated to Palestine Lutheran Church in Huxley.
