Final Rites Held Friday for Late V. W. Judd

Funeral services of V. W. Judd, of 804 Ninth street, longtime Nevada citizen, who died Monday night at the Iowa sanitarium from complications resulting from an injury sustained in a fall upon the Saturday afternoon previous, were held Friday afternoon at the Nevada Methodist church , of which the deceased had been a lifetime active member.

The church was well filled with old neighbors and friends who gathered with the few relatives to pay a tribute of respect to one whom they had long known and held in the highest regard.

The casket at the front of the altar was banked with flowers from the many admiring friends of Mr. Judd.

Scripture was read by C. D. Loose, pastor of the church followed by prayer by Rev. George Lawton of West Des Moines, well beloved former pastor of Mr. Judd.

The song, "Lead Kindly Light" was sung by Mrs. Freeland and Mr. Kruwell, with Mrs. Hathaway at the organ.

Following the song, Rev. Lawton gave a brief but interesting reminiscent talk on his very close and intimate acquaintance with Mr. Judd, especially during the erection of the new church.

Dr. Loose read a brief life sketch of Mr. Judd and then preached the sermon, in which he paid a high tribute to the life and work of the deceased.

The closing song, sung by Mrs. Freeland and Mr. Kruwell was "Rock of Ages."

neighbors and friends who carried the earthly remains of Mr. Judd to the final resting place in the Nevada cemetery, by the side of his wife, son and daughter, were George Kimble, Ivan Cook, H. C. Englebrecht, Art McCaffrey, C. J. Ebert adn H. M. Vinsel.

The obituary of Mr. Judd, prepared and read by Dr. Loose, follows:

"Van William Judd, son of William Judd and Silence Leonard, was born in Winchester, Ill., May 13, 1951, and passed away at the Iowa sanitarium in Nevada Jan. 22, 1946, being in the 89th year of age. He was left an orphan when very young, his mother passing away when he was two years of age and his father dying when he was only 5 years of age. He grew up in the homes of his grandmother and other relatives.

"On Feb. 12, 1874, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary M. Shanklin at Mason, Ill. To this union three children were born. They are John O. Judd, who predeceased his father in death in 1912, Mrs. Ida F. Rasmussen who passed away in 1935; and Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Montgomery of Oak Park, Ill. Besides Mrs. Montgomery, the grandson, Judd Montgomery, student in Drake University in Des Moines, sorrows in the passing of Mr. Judd.

"Mr. Judd, together with his family, moved from Illinois into Iowa about 1895. he purchased a farm about two and one-half miles west and north of Nevada, and made this his home until his retirement about 1907, when he moved to Nevada and located at 803 Ninth street, which has since been his home.

"Mr. Judd joined the Methodist church at Mansfield, Ill., in March of 1886 and has remained a faithful member of the Methodist church since. In his earlier years he was very active in the work of the church, acting as chorister in the Sunday school and singing in the choir of the church, and had a large share in the building of the present new church in Nevada. Mrs. Judd passed away on Nov. 2, 1930, the day old Methodist church of Nevada burned to the ground. And as a memorial to her, Mr. Judd purchased and had placed in the new church the beautiful "Good Shepherd" window which is to be seen directly back of the choir loft in the church. Mr. Judd was familiar figure in the city of Nevada, and will be missed and mourned by a wide circle of friends.
