Richard LeRoy Holmes, 87, formerly of Urbandale, passed from this life on Tuesday, February 5, 2013, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. In agreement with Richard's wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, February 8, at Iles Funeral Homes, Westover Chapel in Des Moines. Burial will follow at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel.

Richard was born on February 26, 1925, in Marquisville, Iowa, to George and Elizabeth Mae (McCarthy) Holmes. He was a navy veteran during World War II, serving in the South Pacific. In December of 1946, Richard married Betty J. Hadley and their marriage was blessed with three children. They later divorced. In 1988, Richard married Betty Bell (Jewell) Pickard. Richard was employed as a furniture salesman with various companies, until his retirement. He also volunteered countless hours with the Urbandale Volunteer Fire Department.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Holmes of Marshalltown; daughter, Dianne Carver of Ankeny, IA; two sons, Richard "Dick" Holmes and his wife, Colleen of Greeley, CO and Kevin Holmes and his wife, Joan of Slater, IA; and ten grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made in Richard's name for the Recreation and Activities Department at the Iowa Veterans Home, 1301 Summit Street, Marshalltown, IA 50158.
