Obituary of Roy Pond
Roy La Verne Pond, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. W. Pond, was born July 27, 1904 at the parental home north of Nevada and died at the Iowa Sanitarium at 4:00 p. m., Friday, October 10, 1930. His death resulted from a tragic plane accident which occurred at 3:25 the same afternoon. In the accident Mr. Earl Gray of Fairmont, Minnesota, Roy's employer, who was piloting the plane was killed instantly.
Roy attended high school at Roland and Milford Consolidated schools. He ws interested in radios and spent much time in building and repairing them. At one time he was employed by the Apex Radio Company as a salesman. In the spring of 1928 he and friend, Marcellus King went to Chicago where Roy had a responsible position with the Stewart Warner Radio Corporation. The two young men were interested in aviation and purchased a Standard Biplane which had been built in the fall of 1927.
Roy with a friend spent several months during the wummer of 1929 flying in Montana. In April of this year he was engaged by Mr. Gray of Fairmont, Minnesota to pilot his Monocoupe. He also piloted other planes.
Roy leaves to mourn his death his father and mother, a sister Leota and a younger brother Howard, also other relatives and many friends.
A Fairmont friend sends the following message: "During the short time that Roy Pond was in Fairmont, he had made a host of friends and they knew him to be a straight forward, clean and industrious young man."
