Earl LaVerne Wahl DVM, 91, of Ames, died Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at Green Hills Health Care Center. A memorial service for Dr. Wahl will be Saturday, April 5, 2014 at 2:30 PM at Bethesda Lutheran Church, 1517 Nortwestern Ave. in Ames.

Earl was born on March 17, 1923 on the family farm in rural Delaware County, Iowa. He graduated from Monticello High School and received his veterinary training at Iowa State College, where he graduated in 1951. Earl served in the United States Navy during World War II. He married Ann Riecke on June 18, 1948 in Iowa City. He owned a large animal practice in Anamosa, Iowa until his retirement in 1987.

While in Anamosa, Earl was very active in civic, professional and church activities. He served on the Anamosa School Board, Anamosa Community Hospital Board, Lions Club, Past-president of Eastern Iowa Veterinary Medical Association, Member of the Iowa State Veterinary Medical Association and American Veterinary Medical Association, and served St. Paul's Lutheran in Anamosa as a board member, choir member and Sunday school teacher. Earl was a member of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in Ames and enjoyed traveling, gardening, reading and photography.

Earl is survived by his children, Teresa (Dr. William) Bailey of Sioux City, Cynthia Wahl, of Ames, Gregory (Lee) Wahl of Carmichael, CA and James (Donna Ellis) Wahl DVM of Tinley Park, IL; grandchildren, Arra (Fred) Katona of Wheat Ridge, CO, Cathia (Nick) Krehbiel of Hutchinson, KS, Andrew Wahl of Chicago, and Peter Wahl of Bloomington, IL; great grandchildren, Laszlo and Novalyn Katona and Duncan and Bailey Krehbiel; a brother, Robert (Ruth) Wahl of Monticello and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann.
