Gretchen Helen Triplett was born July 8, 1937 to Nick and Helen (Schoenjahn) Schwarzenbach in Carroll, Iowa. Gretchen worked as a secretary at Iowa State University. Gretchen was a Story County Master Gardener, a member of the Ames Garden Club, Iowa Arboretum, Iowa Gardening Study Program, Story County Genealogical Society, German Genealogical Research Group, Iowa Genealogical Society, National Woman's Relief Corps and Auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic. She enjoyed singing, giving lectures on the civil war and volunteered at Israel Family Hospice House, Mary Greeley Medical Center and at the information desk at Ames City Hall.

Her backyard was her oasis: Gretchen carefully planned, planted and maintained her flowers. She loved the outdoors and creating a beautiful space.

Gretchen passed away January 9, 2014 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Gretchen is survived by her son, T. J. (Carol) Triplett of Burlington, Wisconsin and their children Tanner and Maddi; her daughter, Elizabeth (Brad) Harken, of Hiawatha, Iowa and their children, Sarah, of St. Louis, Missouri and Benny, of Australia; her daughter-in-law, Sue Triplett, of Plainfield, Illinois and her children, Nick and Taylor; and her brother, Roger (Maryln) Schwarzenbach, of Lucas, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one son, Matthew.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to Israel Family Hospice House or Calvary United Methodist Church.
