Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

James Irving Lee, son of Alfred and Emma (Vallem) Lee, was born September 11, 1919, at the family home in rural Radcliffe, being delivered by a veterinarian, as the local doctor was not available. He was raised on the farm and received his education in the Radcliffe school system, graduating from Radcliffe High in 1937. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945 during World War II. On June 10, 1951, he married Esther Schulz. They farmed in Garden City, Radcliffe and Zearing. James and Esther raised two children, daughters Sonja (Lee) Foley and Melanie Lee. In 1963 the family moved to Story City and James began working at the National Animal Disease Center in Ames. He retired in 1988.

Upon retirement, James became an avid golfer. James and his daughter Melanie traveled to Europe four times, in addition to domestic motor coach trips throughout the United States and Canada. He also kept up on world events and politics through newspapers, television and magazines.

James Irving Lee, 94, of Story City died peacefully at home on December 14, 2013, under the care of his daughters and the compassionate staff of Wesley Life Home Hospice.

James is survived by daughters Sonja (Bruce) Foley and Melanie Lee; granddaughters Brandi Foley and Amber Foley, brother Ralph Lee; sisters Margaret (Carroll) Ellwood and Marilyn Engelson; sister-in-law Ruth Espe; brother-in-law Vic (Gerri) Schultz and numerous nieces and nephews.
