Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Hyrel “Maxine” Eichler, faithful mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, was born December 16, 1915, in Wakefield, Nebraska, the daughter of Henry and Lydia “Hyrel” Wriedt. She went to be with her Lord Saturday, December 14, 2013, at her daughter and son-in law’s home in Ames, where she was residing.

She graduated from Pender High School, attended 3 years at Wayne State Teacher’s College, and taught for 3 years at a rural school in Thurston County, Nebraska, beginning in 1936. From rural Nebraska, she moved to Chicago and worked for Western Union. Maxine and Carlton Eichler met and were married in 1947 and soon moved from Chicago to New London, Iowa, for Carl’s employment at the Iowa–Illinois Telephone Company. They enjoyed bringing up three daughters: Carol, Nancy, and Marilyn. In 1965, a merger in the phone company had them moving to St. Louis, but Carl died suddenly from a heart attack. Maxine stayed in New London, went back to college to become an LPN and was employed by the New London Care Center until her retirement in 1984. During those years, she enjoyed participating in Harmony Bible Church and in Eastern Star.

In 1988, she moved to Ames, Iowa, and became a vital part of two of her daughters’, grandkids’ and later great grandkids’ activities, the life of the Ontario Bible Church “family” (now CityChurch of Ames–Des Moines), and the remarkable Ames community.

Maxine loved, served, and enjoyed her family, friends, and church family. She embraced what life brought her and just "kept going," until her death 2 days shy of her 98th birthday.

She is survived by daughters Carol Eichler and husband Steve Dell’Orto of Ithaca, New York; Nancy Reed and husband Jeff, Ames; Marilyn Thompson and husband Jeff, Iowa City; stepdaughter Diane Howell , Davis, California; stepson Pete Eichler and wife Jan, Antioch, Illinois; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brother Derwood Wriedt, her stepson David Eichler, and many friends.

A memorial service will be held at the CityChurch of Ames–Des Moines, 2400 Oakwood Road, Ames, at 10:30 a.m. Saturday December 21, with her son-in-law Jeff Reed officiating. Interment will be at a later date at Burge Cemetery in New London, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Maxine’s name to BILD International, which was her favorite charity, or to a charity of your choice. Memorials and sympathies can be sent to the family: Family of Maxine Eichler, 1835 Meadow Glen Rd N, Ames, IA 50014. Arrangements by Adams Funeral Home.
