Gregor Albert Junk, 80, of Ames, died comfortably and peacefully Sunday, August 18, at his home of natural causes and was under continual nursing care. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Thursday, August 22, 2013 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Ames with a visitation on Wednesday from 5 – 7 PM at Stevens Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow the mass at Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Greg was born in Guttenberg, Iowa to Albert and Marie Fassbinder Junk on January 5, 1933 and was the youngest of 6 children. He graduated from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa with a degree in chemistry and went on to graduate school at Berkley, California. Upon his return to the Midwest, Greg married the love of his life, Mary Therese Ahrends, who was a nursing student at the time. Greg and Mary settled in Ames and Greg began his career as a research chemist at Ames Laboratory, Iowa State University until his retirement.

Following his retirement from Ames Lab, Greg continued his consulting work for many years, mostly in water analysis. The consulting work brought opportunities for travel and Greg and Mary took many treasured trips to places including Australia, Japan and Hawaii.

Greg was an excellent husband, father and provider. The family always enjoyed joyous holidays and summer vacations in the sun. He was an avid golfer and bowler, and loved hunting and fishing. Greg was a member of Saint Cecilia Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus and gave his time tirelessly to many volunteer activities. Greg was an enthusiastic Iowa State Cyclone fan.

Greg is survived by his three children, Susan Marie Wilson, of Greensboro, NC, David John Junk, of Nevada, and Mark Jeffrey Junk, of Ames; a granddaughter, Mary Junk of Ames and two sisters, Anna Mae Powers of Elkader and Phyllis (Leon) Berns of Garnavillo. He was preceded in death by his wife; two brothers, Verle and Gene and a sister, Elaine Gustafson.
