Edith was born on November 16, 1923 in Manchester, the only child of Truman and Elizabeth Heiserman Goldsmith. She attended country school near Colesburg where she completed the eighth grade.

In 1941 Edith married Arthur Rippey and they were blessed with one son. Arthur died in 1943 while serving in the US Army during WWII. After Vergal's death in 2003, Edith returned to Waterloo to be near family and finally moved to Ames in 2009.

Edith enjoyed a very active retirement traveling, crocheting, collecting cook books and recipes, watching cooking shows on TV, cooking, rummage sales and going out to eat. She was an active member of North Grand Christian Church and a lifetime member of the Royal Order of the Moose and AMVETS.
