Ralph Arlington Beane
Oct. 23, 1905 to Sept. 1, 1996Ralph Arlington Beane, 90, of Britt and formerly of Garner and Nevada, died of heart failure on Sunday, Sept. 1, at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center in Mason City.
He was born to Dr. Burnice H. and Nellye (Carey) Beane on Oct 23, 1905 in LeGrand. He was a 1923 graduate of LeGrand High School. In 1927, he graduated from Penn College in Oskaloosa and later received a master's degree from Iowa State College in Ames.
He lived in Nevada from 1971-1995. He was superintendent of schools in Gilbert, Lone Rock, Everly, Green Mountain and Steamboat Rock schools. Before his retirement in 1971, he was principal at Rudd, Rockford and Mable Rock schools. On March 28, 1936, he married Eunice H. Askelson in Iowa City.
He was a Birthright member of the Friends Church in LeGrand and was an active member of Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada, holding offices at the state and local levels. Through the years, he was active in and held offices in the Iowa State Education Association, Masonic Lodge, Lions and Kiwanis clubs and the Red Cross. He was a Boy Scout leader and an R.S.V.P. volunteer for 25 years, totaling 18,700 hours of service. He was instrumental in establishing the Nevada Senior Citizens Center, the fellowship luncheon and the Meadows Senior Housing Apartments. He took great joy in family and was an avid sportsman.
Survivors include a son, Blaine D. Beane of Barrington Hills, Ill.; a daughter, Karen Norstrud of Britt; nine grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eunice, in January of 1986; a daughter Alanna Nelson, in 1986; and three brothers, Raymond, Lewis and Elmo.
Funeral services are being held Thursday, Sept 5, at 1:30 p.m. at Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada with Pastor Ellen Taube officiating. Burial will be in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established. Chet Ryan Mortuary, Nevada, is handling arrangements.
