From Bacon Funeral Home & Crematory obituary, Nevada and Maxwell, Story County, Iowa:

Leona Meyers
June 12, 1921 - May 25, 2013

Leona M. Meyers, 91, passed away May 25, 2013 at Ballard Creek Community in Huxley.

Leona was born June 12, 1921 in Michigan, ND, to Louis and Monica (Hoffarth) Bimler. She married Kenneth R. Meyers on Feb. 21, 1944 in Tacoma, WA. They had two children.
Leona lived a life of loving service to others. A long-time resident of St. Paul, MN, she was active in the Catholic Church and served in many volunteer capacities over the years, including hospice and Eucharistic ministry. She ministered to God’s people in this way for 20 years. She was secretary of Women’s Aglow and the resident council of the senior housing complex, The Winslow, where she lived for many years.

When she was 65, she bought a car and learned to drive so she could help people even more by taking them to the doctor, grocery store, church, or to pick up food at distribution centers for seniors. Her fellow residents knew they could always come to her for a greeting card, a button, needle and thread, and such needs of daily living.

Leona was an avid reader and kept up with current events. She had a lifelong passion for learning and was always curious how things worked. At age 85, she took computer lessons and purchased her own computer. She used her printer to copy prayers and interesting articles for other residents. When she was 83, she started her family history and memoirs, and completed the 366-page book at age 88. At age 88, she also penned a short genealogy of the Bimler sons.

She had a lifelong love of animals of all kinds, especially dogs and horses. She loved nature, especially peonies that bloomed around her birthday, and often commented about beautiful trees. Primarily a homemaker, she also had a variety of jobs over the years. During World War II, she worked briefly at Boeing in Washington, and later at the Twin Cities Ordnance plant making ammunition for the war effort. She applied to the Women’s Army Corps (WACs), but was rejected because she wore eyeglasses. Later in life, she worked at a women’s college, a hospital, a funeral home, a rag factory, and an iron factory.

She is survived by her daughters, Joannie (Jim) Dooley of Huxley, Iowa, and Jeanene (Beauford “Butch”) Kleidon of St. Paul; a granddaughter, Jennifer Kidder (John Scott) of Joplin, MO; step-granddaughter Cindy Dooley (David Montgomery) of Abilene, KS; step great-grandchildren, Brandon Stokesbary of Minneapolis, MN, and Cody and Kelsey Stokesbary of Abilene, KS; the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of Butch Kleidon, and the children and grandchildren of David Montgomery. She cherished her many nieces and nephews and “grands,” the children of special friends, her daughter’s mother-in-law, Jackie Dooley, and all the families of her loving heart.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; four sisters, Dorothy Hilyar, Margie Hudson, Virginia Ann Bimler, and Mary Lou Berg; two brothers, Matthew Bimler and James Bimler; and a step-grandson, Rocky Kleidon.

Leona loved Ballard Creek Community, and her family is grateful for the compassionate care she received there as well as the care from the Homeward Hospice team.

Memorials may be made to the Ballard Creek Community Assisted Living, Huxley.

Bacon Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Nevada are assisting the family.
