Donald Gunderson
March 05, 1944 - May 24, 2013Donald Gunderson, 69, passed away in his home on Friday, May 24, 2013 after losing his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his wife, daughter and son at the time of his death.
He was born March 5, 1944, to Ralph and Edna (Calloway) Gunderson, in Eldora, Iowa. He married Karen Tasa on December 1, 1968. They moved to Nevada, where he spent his career in the automotive industry, beginning as a race car driver and auto mechanic, working his way up to service manager, and then owning his own car dealership, Gunderson Motors. He and his wife were blessed with two wonderful children. During his life he was a member of the Nevada Rotary and Indian Creek Country Club, serving as President of both and in many other capacities. He retired from finance manager at Ron Willey Auto Group in 2010 and spent the remainder of his life spending time with his children, grandchildren, family, and friends, playing many holes of golf on his favorite course, and traveling with his wife; seeing 25 national parks and all of the lower 48 states in his last years.
He bravely battled cancer for almost six years, always courageous and with a positive outlook.
He is survived by his wife, Karen of 44 years; children Tammy (Aaron) Luke of Kansas City, Missouri; Eric (Heather) Gunderson of Cedar Falls, Iowa; grandchildren Megan, Samantha and Leah Gunderson and Brandon and Sarah Luke; brothers David (Carol) Gunderson and Robert (Judy) Gunderson, both of Union, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews and many wonderful friends.
In accordance with his wishes, a celebration of his life will be held at Indian Creek Country Club in Nevada, on Saturday, June 1, 2013, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be directed to Bliss Cancer Center and Homeward Hospice, both in Ames, Iowa.
