From Adams & Soderstrum Funeral Home obituary, Story County, Iowa:

Diane Ihlene Clayberg
March 13, 1938 - April 14, 2013

Diane Ihlene Brown Clayberg passed away at home in Story City on April 14, 2013, following a long battle with cancer. She was 75 years old.

Diane was born March 13, 1938, to Homer D. and Myrtle N. (Nyguard) Brown. She graduated from Story City High School in 1956 and married Russell Duane “Butch” Clayberg on September 7, 1957, at Grace Evangelical United Brethren Church in Story City. Their 50-year marriage was blessed with six children.

When Diane’s youngest child entered kindergarten, she began work as a teacher’s aide at the Roland-Story Elementary School in Story City. She eventually became the elementary school secretary and worked at the school for 30 years. Hallmarks of her tenure at the school were her friendly, informative voice on the telephone, her ready smile of welcome as visitors arrived at the school office, her funny announcements over the intercom, her zany hats and costumes as she punched children’s lunch tickets, her quick wit and enjoyment in participating in skits with the elementary staff, and most of all, her warm regard for and interest in the children of the Roland-Story Elementary School. Her many hobbies included playing in the Touch of Grace Bell Choir; singing in the Grace United Methodist Chancel Choir; quilting with the Grace Quilters; volunteering at the Bertha Barlett Public Library and participating in book clubs; crocheting beautiful projects for loved ones; lunching with family and friends; creating whimsical crafts and gifts; reading; and – most especially – supporting her children and grandchildren in their concerts, plays, ballgames and special events.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the Roland-Story Athletic Booster Club; Roland-Story M.A.S.T. and the Story City Historical Society.

Diane is survived by her six children, Cathy (Mark) Hermanson of Story City, Scott (Kim) Clayberg of Waukee, Kelly (Bruce) Leuschen of Story City, Brett (Megan) Clayberg of Pella, Stacy (Matt) Soderstrum of Story City, Kent Clayberg of Pella. Also surviving her are two sisters, Judy (Carroll) Brekke of Story City and Cheryl (Chuck) Semler and one brother, Gary (Hope) Brown and sister-in-law, Melissa (Gene) Brown all of Story City. She leaves behind 16 beloved grandchildren; Mackenzie “Max” Hermanson; Jonathan (Katie) Clayberg, Steven Clayberg, Bethany (T.J.) Sebolt; Jessica, Jordan and Jackson Leuschen; Nathan, Noah, Natalie and Nolan Clayberg; Bailey (Michael) Olson; Shelby, Samuel, Charlsea and Josiah Soderstrum. Diane will be missed by her brother-in-law, David (Charlene) Clayberg of Marcus; and her sisters-in-law, Sandra (Jack) South of Phoenix; and Barbara (Stoney) Clayberg of Story City; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, cousins and dear friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one brother, Gene Brown; and one infant grandson, Nicholas Ryan Clayberg.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Diane Clayberg Memorial Fund at 1028 Penn, Story City. Gifts in her memory will be made to the Touch of Grace Bell Choir and the Roland-Story Elementary Playground Fund.
