Thursday, January 7, 1909 “Ames Intelligence” Buell Tilden
Buell Tilden was born in Ames, Story County, Iowa on April 25, 1888, and died Wednesday, December 30, 1908, at the home of his parents on Douglas Avenue. He was in the freshman class of Iowa State College and pledged for membership in the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. He was of genial disposition with an easygoing temperament that made him very popular with all his associates. His death is the first break in the family of Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Tilden. He was the youngest of six children leaving three brothers and two sisters. Profound sympathy is breathed forth from many hearts because of the sudden and untimely loss at a time when joy should have reigned in the hearts of the many now bereft.

With him life was just beginning, not having attained his majority. Shielded from the hardships of life by a comfortable home and loving hearts he had not bore any of the great responsibilities that try men’s souls. The history of what he was to be is only prophecy from what he has been among his friends and associates. In a world where we wish for every man a chance, it seems to us as if he were deprived of his. Because of this a community mourns for it youth when they fall, and we wish
it were possible for all who are young and hopeful to attain their highest and their best. He died with typhoid fever after an illness of about three weeks and to the family now broken the ministry of a host of people is either audibly or silently spoken.

A large audience gathered at the Congregational Church where the services were conducted by Reverend William J. Minchin. A quartette composed of Mrs. Hultz, Mrs. Judisch, Mr. Hultz and Mr. Bell sang “Lead Kindly Light” and “Jesus, Lover of My Soul,” and Mrs. Judisch sang “Sometime We’ll Understand.” The interment was in the city cemetery.
