BORN: June 11, 1921
DIED: May 26, 2011
LOCATION: Ames, Iowa

Dr. Jack Edward Powell

Jack arrived at the end of the trail just prior to his highly anticipated ninetieth birthday celebration.

Services will be at Adams Funeral Home. Visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m. with the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. Burial will immediately follow at ISU Cemetery.

Dr. Powell spent most of his career as a chemist at Iowa State University and its famed Ames Laboratory, where he conducted ground-breaking work on the separation of the rare-earth elements and was recognized by the War Department for his work with the Manhattan Project which was essential to the production of the Atomic Bomb that contributed to the successful conclusion of WWII. Jack was born in Avon Illinois to Glenn Powell and Marcia (Mummy) Powell. He attended Monmouth College where he met and later married "Pretty Redhead" Darlene Dixon. Jack received his PHD in Chemistry from Iowa State University and began his work for the Atomic Energy Commission. Dr. Powell also taught Chemistry at ISU until he retired in 1987.
Dr. Powell is survived by his brother Richard Powell of Bradenton FL, his four children, Peggy Drain of Peoria Il, John Powell of Des Moines IA, Paula Collins of Brownwood TX, and Robert Powell of Oklahoma City, OK; 10 Grandchildren, and 10 Great Grandchildren.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Boy Scouts of America.
