Two more were added to the list of killed in the Rock Island wreck at Casey Monday night, making seven in all. Two of these are former Story county men; Rev. J. W. Caldwell of Van Meter former pastor of the Methodist church at Colo and B. W. John formerly of Maxwell. Rev. Caldwell was a passenger on a freight train and Mr. John who is cousin of the John brothers of this city was a brakeman on the same train. The engineer who is believed to be at fault was killed but the conductor who is equally responsible escaped.
From Story County Watchman November 10, 1905
Bowen John of Des Moines, the brakeman who met death in the wreck at Csey last week, was brought to his old home in Maxwell for burial Thursday of last week. The service was conducted by Rev. Dr. Wilson of Davenport assisted by Rev. Clay Bobbitt. Dr. Wilson preached a very able sermon in which he portrayed life in all its beauties and said that the Christian never died but was only transformed into new realms and made the partaker of larger blessings than were possible here.
