From Story County Watchman December 10, 1897

Tuesday our citizens were startled by the report that John Kirkendall had just suddenly died. He was at work at the slaughter house with Mr. Crippen when taken and only lived a few moments. A doctor was sent for but when he arrived it was too late as he was beyond the reach of aid. He was a native of Ohio but came to this place some 35 years since and has ever since been one of our most esteemed citizens. He leaves a wife but no children to mourn his loss. He was one of those who always sought to do good for all there will be aplace left by his absence that will be hard to fill. The public generally extend to the bereaved wife, brothers and sisters their sympathy in this their hour of affliction.

The funeral was conducted at the Advent church yesterday afternoon and the remains laid to rest in the Nevada cemetery to await the last call.
