Obituary.
DIED.--James Matthews was born in Hardin Co., Ohio, January 30th, 1824. Was married to Mary Heles* Dec. 10, 1846. Emigrated to Iowa 1856 settling in this county.
Died Aug 8. Aged 68 year and six months. In his early manhood he was converted and united with the M. E. church of which he remains a consistent member until his death. By industry and frugality he secured a pleasant home with all model comforts.
The ways of Providence though strange and afflicting yet in the end ofted proves a blessing. One of his sons became afflicted with fits which unfitted him for general labor. This was a source of anxiety and complaint yet in the end proved the help needed. For month before his death he was helpless, requiring constant aid not even able to feed himself. This son was always present with him lifting him into his chair and bed and feeding him. By non will he be more missed than by this son.
One of his neighbors paid a marked tribute of respect as he passed by taking his last view of the corpse, he paused and with tears said, when I came to this country I had no house, he took me in and cared for me until I could secure one. His funeral was attended by a large concourse of neighbors and friends. The funeral services was held in the M. E. church conducted by the writer assisted by Rev. Dawson, pastor of the church.
"He rests from his labors and his works do follow him."
