From Story County Watchman November 9, 1888

DIED.--Tuesday morning James Barnes at the residence of his father in this city. He has been ailing for some months and the end has been looked forward to for some time. He was a young man of much promise and his loss is a severe affliction to his grieving parents and numerous friends. The remains were interred in the Nevada Cemetery Wednesday.

From Story County Watchman November 16, 1888

IN MEMORIAM--Whereas God in His Providence has seen fit to remove by death our worthy young brother James Barnes, who died at the residence of his father in Nevada, Iowa, Nov. 6th, 1888, after a lingering illness, Therefore,

Resolved, by New Hope Lodge, No. 140, I. O. G. T.:

That we feel very much the loss of this young brother, and mourn his untimely death,

That we bow with submission to the Divine will and hope that our loss is his eternal gain.

That we tender to the bereaved family our heartfelt sympathy in this time of their sorrow.

That we will cherish the memory of our brother and will keep our Lodge room in mourning the usual time.

That these resolutions be published in the city papers.
