From Story County Watchman July 23, 1886
James Fields, a respected citizen of Maxwell, aged about 66 years, was riding in his buggy, near the railroad track, on Friday 19th inst, when the horse took fright at a hand-car, and started to run. Mr. Field was thrown from the buggy against a barbed-wire fence, and was dragged some distance his body being badly bruised and fearfully lacerated. He lingered until Monday evening following suffering terribly, when death ensued. He was buried on Tuesday in the Maxwell Cemetery, the funeral being largely attended by the people of Maxwell and vicinity. Religious services were conducted by Rev. R. A. Ferguson and Rev. Isaac Atkinson. His loss will be very much felt by the community of which he was an honored citizen.
