Amelia Catharine (Pring) Evans Whitaker (1837-1911)

OBITUARY OF MRS. WHITAKER
(unidentified newspaper clipping)

The funeral of the late Mrs. D.J. Whitaker (1)was held on Monday, Feb. 27, at the Lynn Grove Methodist church near Bondurant in Polk county [Iowa]. Interment was at the Santiago cemetery. All of the children and six of the eight grandchildren were present at the funeral. Frank and Hazel Barr, two of the grandchildren, were in Oklahoma and unable to be present.

Amelia C. Pring(2) was born March 9, 1837 in Van Wert county, Ohio, near Willhere, and departed this life near Bondurant, Iowa, February 24, 1911. She was a daughter of Mary and Richard Pring(3) and one of a family of ten children, four of whom survive her, they being Parnetta Springer of Indiana, Thomas Pring and Mrs. B.T. Johnston of Bondurant, and Wesley Pring of North Dakota. She grew to womanhood in Ohio, came with her parents to Iowa in 1857 and was married to Joshua E. Evans on December 3 of the same year. To this union two children were born. Mrs. Loucina McConnel of Nevada and Nancy, who died at the age of 9 years.

She was afterwards married to D.J. Whitaker of Nevada, July 4, 1805. Four children were born to this union, Laura, who died at the age of four years, and Mrs. Pernetta Barr who died in Oklahoma March 16, 1894; John W. of Mitchelville and Perry of Maynard, Minn. The husband and surviving children, except Perry, were at her bedside during her last hours. The latter arrived later.

During the years she lived in Kansas with her family […copy seems to be missing here…] or about 1888 she joined the W.R.C. and was transferred to the Kinsman corps of Des Moines on their return to their old home. She confessed Christ as her Savior and united with the Evangelical church near Nevada in 1871 and remained in that church til 1892, on their removal to Polk county, when for convenience, her letter was transferred to the M.E. church near Santiago. She remained faithful to her Master who has promised a crown for the righteous and a home in heaven. She and her husband at different times had made welcome in their home ten of their near relatives who were homeless for a time. To say that all who knew her loved her, is not enough, but we leave the reward to her God who is just. She was a faithful wife and mother and leaves besides a husband and children, many relatives, friends and neighbors who mourn the loss of such a noble and loving woman.
