Respected Young Lady is Laid to Rest in Roland Cemetery - Leaves Parents, Two Sisters, Five Brothers and Numerous Relatives and Friends to Mourn Her Death

Our heart is filled with sorrow, and we are at a loss how to write the obituary of our dearly beloved sister, Miss Susan Dorthea Rod, who passed away last Friday morning at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Rod. The deceased was born in Roland on February 13, 1889 and was 20 years, 7 months and 4 days old, when called to a better home. Two years ago, she caught a severe cold at her home in Wisconsin, where she lived for five years with her parents, and this cold developed into that dreaded disease, consumption. Her loving parents did all in their power to get a cure for her, but it was all to no purpose, as the disease was too firmly rooted to be relieved. She suffered patiently, fully aware that she had but a few months to live, and she was prepared to meet her Saviour when the summons came, shortly after sunrise on Friday morning, September 17th. Her death was as her sickness had been, very peaceful and without any pain. Her death leaves a vacancy in the home that will be felt be all, but mostly by her mother, who nursed her so patiently to the end, and to her the home will be very desolate.

Besides her parents, she leaves two sisters, Julia and Esther, five brothers, M. O. Rod, who lives here, Conrad, who is a marine in the United States service and is at present at New York, Mandus, Gerhard, and Arthur. All of her brothers and sisters were present at the funeral with the exception of Conrad, who could not be reached so as to get here in time for the funeral. Besides these, she leaves a large number of friends and relatives to mourn her untimely death.

The funeral was held from Bergen church on Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. G. Smedal, who confirmed her six years ago, performed the last rites over the dead. The church was beautifully decorated and the casket was covered with very beautiful floral gifts from loving givers. After the service at church the remains were interred in the Roland cemetery. Our hearts are sad at the loss of a dear one, but we feel rejoiced that she died in the true faith of Him who died to save us.

Those from a distance who attended the funeral are, Mrs. Ellen M. Lund, of Randall, Mrs. Andrew Swenson, of Story City, Mrs. Martha Michaelson, of Stanhope, Mrs. H. F. Teig, of Randall, Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Omvig, of Webster City, Mr. Knudt C. Knudtson and Hjermond Hereim, of Jewell, John O. Teig, of Rosendale.

Card of Thanks

We wish hereby to express our most profound appreciation for the many acts of kindness and evidences of sympathy extended to us during the sickness and death of our beloved daughter and sister, Dorthea. We also wish to thank all who decorated the church so beautifully and for the many beautiful floral offerings. We can say no more, but pray the Almighty Father to bless and reward you one and all, and hope that we shall all meet Dorthea on the other shore.

Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Rod and Children
