THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, January 7, 2010.

Michael Dean McFarland, son of Merlin and Barb McFarland, of Ames and formerly of Jewell, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines of complications from heart surgery. Memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, at Crossroads Fellowship Christian Reformed Church, 1200 60th St., in West Des Moines.

McFarland graduated from Jewell High School and worked at the NADL while getting his doctorate degree from Iowa State University. He worked primarily in poultry disease research at various disease labs in Iowa, Kansas, Arkansas and, for the last several years, at UC-Davis in Fresno, Calif. He moved to Des Moines after early retirement due to his health.

He is listed in volume 1981 of “Outstanding Young Men of America.”

He is survived by his wife, Diana; one daughter, Jennifer; one son, Jonathan (Nursel); parents, Merlin and Barbara McFarland; beloved sister, Judy McFarland, of Des Moines; sister-in-law, Kris Hansen; mother-in-law, Dorothy Dewey; and various nieces and nephews and cousins.
